#IBioIC21 Scottish industrial biotechnology community hits combined turnover milestone

Trade and Innovation Minister Ivan McKee MSP and Steve Bagshaw CBE, non-executive chairman of Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies supported an IBioIC announcement on industry progress towards meeting the targets set out in the National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology, ahead of the seventh annual conference. The 2019 full year figures found businesses active in industrial biotechnology accounted for £747 million in turnover, increasing from £189 million in 2012. Speaking ahead of IBioIC’s seventh annual conference, CEO Mark Bustard penned a piece on how Scotland’s industrial biotechnology companies are pivoting towards drug development, production of reagents for diagnostics tests and the development of biologically-derived materials for use in PPE and sanitiser. The story landed with a big splash in The Scotsman online and print, The National online and in print, Medtech News and Scottish Business News.

 

Life sciences expert and former FT journalist joins IBioIC to lead industry engagement

News of IBioIC’s appointment of Liz Fletcher as new director of business engagement and operations made a splash in Insider, Scottish Business News, EnviroTec and Daily Business. Liz joins IBioIC from the University of Edinburgh, where she managed the UK Centre for Mammalian Synthetic Biology alongside her role as senior research development manager. She has more than 25 years’ experience in the life sciences sector and was previously a market and technology analyst at Scottish Enterprise, supporting companies looking to develop or expand into life sciences. Prior to this, Liz worked in journalism, writing and editing for the Financial Times and Nature Biotechnology.

 

Whisky industry and biotech innovators collaborate to find new sustainable solutions

IBioIC teamed up with Zero Waste Scotland and the Scotch Whisky Research Institute for a joint media announcement to support the launch of an IBioIC led whisky co-products project featuring three IBioIC member companies: MiAlgae, Horizon Proteins and BioPower Technologies. The story was picked up in The National (print only), Scottish Business News, Beverage Daily, Circular Online, Deadline News, as well as a first in trade publication Feed Navigator.

 

Industry experts endorse five-year vision for National Horizons Centre

Teesside University’s National Horizons Centre made an  announcement on the industry endorsement for the centre’s five-year business plan aiming to grow the UK’s bioscience industry. IBioIC CEO Mark Bustard gave a quote to support new IBioIC member the National Horizons Centre on the media announcement, which was picked up by regional press in the Northern Echo.
