Skilling the Workforce

It’s the season of new starts, completions, and celebrations in the world of IBioIC’s Skills programmes!

Congratulations to 18 of our 2021-22 MSc cohort who graduated over the summer, and a very warm welcome to our new PhD, MSc and HND students.

Congratulations also to former MSc students Grace Nisbet, Tabassum Ara and Colm Boyd, who all started permanent positions recently with Ingenza.

9 new PhD projects started in the last quarter with The Antibody Company, Victrex, Syngenta, SAMS Enterprise, Scotch Whisky Research Institute, Impact Solutions and BioMara.

How to Cost BioProcess training

In October, we ran How to Cost BioProcess, a CPD training course run at introductory and advanced levels for students and industry. Participants did their own business model costing in groups and delivered their presentations to a delivery team who posed questions and provided constructive critiques of each group’s work.

Both editions were held at the Insight Institute at the University of Strathclyde and delivered by Ian Archer with guest panellists from IBioIC and Ingenza’s Reuben Carr joining the presentations for the Advanced course.

STEM Ambassador training

Another training highlight was the STEM Ambassador training which took placed on 21 October with 29 PhD students and 1 HND in attendance.

The STEM Ambassadors Programme is a UK wide volunteer programme for people who are passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and wish to inspire young people. This volunteering can take many forms including working with schools, supporting youth groups, setting up STEM Clubs, mentoring and much more.

STEM Ambassadors get access to lots of opportunities, free online training and networking sessions, access to STEM resources and support and advice from the STEM Ambassadors in Scotland Hub based at SSERC. We ensure that all STEM Ambassadors have a profile on the website (www.stem.org.uk), complete an online induction and PVG application prior to volunteering. For more information check out our website: www.stemambassadors.scot or email stemambassadors@sserc.scot.

MSc Graduations

Congratulations to all of our graduates. Here are some testimonials from graduating MSc students.

The masters year provided the opportunity to be creative and collaborative with ideas and techniques within Industrial Biotechnology. The placement allowed for the successful translation of this creativity into extremely useful practical skills and personal project management.
